About the Michigan Tech Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) translates into "the gentle art" because this martial art uses submissions as a more humane alternative to striking. Technique and leverage to overcome size and strength, thus making BJJ much more practical for smaller opponents against larger ones.
BJJ emphasizes ground grappling. The aim is generally to use a variety of grappling holds to advance in positioning, and to finally obtain a submission hold causing the opponent to quit.
Fact #1: Larger opponents will try to muscle the smaller one around. BJJ utilzes leverage and balance to counter larger opponents
Fact #2: Women will usually be forced to the ground before they can be physically abused. BJJ offers defense and submissions from the ground
Fact #3: The Michigan Tech BJJ Club will increase physical fitness, endurance, core strength, and confidence while having fun!!!
Michigan Tech BJJ Club offers Instruction and Training in
- Ground Submissions and Defense including joint manipulations and chokes
- Takedowns and Defense including wrestling takedowns, Judo throws, and fundamentals to help prevent injuries
- Gi and No-Gi Techniques and Tactics, and also competition style "Rolling."

History
The Michigan Tech Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club was founded in 2003 by Steve Wilmers, Anthony Oliver, and Courtney Harkness. When the club originally started there was a small group of devoted attendees. Throughout the years since the club was founded the adoption and mass publication the of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and other Mixed Martial Arts events has helped the club flourish. Since then there have been multiple people who have successfully obtained their blue belts as well as help promote the club as a whole. There are now more than 30 practicing members as well as multiple practice times a week and has grown to probably be one of the most active clubs at Michigan Tech.
